Much has been written about the weather, both good and bad , here in the UP. In any event, we do have several different weather phenomenon’s going on up here because of the Great Lakes . Our summers are generally cool compared to the areas of the Mid-West that do not have the effect of the Great Lakes. In the winter, generally, you can count on snow up here nearly every year. The snowmobile, skiing, and ice fishing aficionados’ love it. Temperatures in the summer are generally a little cooler than you will find over in Minnesota and in the winter somewhat warmer. Summer nights can require a sweater but on some occasions it gets well into the 90’s during the day.

If you like boating or fishing on Lake Superior then May and June is the calmest time of the year for wave conditions due to the fact the cold lake water sets up a high pressure boundary layer just above the surface that the warmer winds cannot penetrate. The as the water warms the waves become larger. Inland lakes warm up rapidly due to the length of sunlight in the summer months. Often convective storms seem to grow over the land mass but not over the open water on the Great lakes due to the effect of the cold water.

During July and August this area probably has the most refreshing temperatures in the Continental United States. Many people flock here from the hot steamy days in Lower Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois and other areas.
