AU TRAIN LAKE CAMPGROUND/HIAWATHA NATIONAL FOREST
(906) 387-3700;
-
not reservable
830-acre Au Train Lake, largest in the area, is popular not only for fishing (for northern, walleye, and perch) but for water-skiing. Of the 37 shady rustic sites (no showers, vault toilets, first-come, first-serve) on two asphalt loops, 11 are right on Buck Bay, on the lake's east side. A boat launch and picnic area with swimming beach are adjacent. The 2-mile songbird trail (see separate point of interest) starts here. Canoes and boats can be rented locally.
-
Just east off H-03/Au Train-Forest Lake Rd., 4 miles south of M-28 at Au Train and 3 miles north of M-94. Look for National Forest sign at Forest Rd. 227. $9/night. Open from May 15 to Sept. 30. Handicap accessible: not currently
BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING ALONG PICTURED ROCKS' NORTH COUNTRY TRAIL

-
Permits required from the Visitor Center; (906) 387-3700
13 dispersed primitive campsites, to be used by hikers and kayakers, are along this popular trail. Most are at stream mouths or near lakes. Mosquito River, Chapel Beach, and Beaver Creek campsites are below the bluff, near beaches. Several designated backcountry campsites are along the way. If you get a permit, you can line up a campsite. They are available by reservation by mail or fax only from the Munising Visitor Center at (906) 387-3700. Reservations must be made at least two weeks before your trip. Group campsites are in greatest demand and get reserved first. For 2006 reservations may be handled through the national reservation system for national parks and forests. Cost: $15/permit (up to 14 nights) for groups up to 6; $30 for groups from 7 to 20. All that's provided is a fire ring and bear poles from which food must be hung. Leave-no-trace camping practices should be observed, and backpacking stoves instead of fires are encouraged.

BAY FURNACE CAMPGROUND/HIAWATHA NATIONAL FOREST
(906) 387-2512;
-
not reservable
50 rustic campsites (no showers or electricity) are on two asphalt loops close to Lake Superior. Some sites are wooded, others open. Surprisingly, some sites are usually available in summer. Come early in the week in late July-early August to be sure. There's a small beach and beautiful views across to Grand Island. This campground is a favorite of divers exploring nearby shipwrecks. The ruins of a limestone charcoal furnace are at the picnic area on the entrance road. The company town of Onota, burned in 1877, once was on this site.
-
From M-28 at Christmas, look for sign to Bay Furnace campground. It's not far north of the highway. $10/night. Open May 15-Sept. 30. Wheelchair-accessible: 2 sites.
COLWELL LAKE CAMPGROUND
(906) 341-5666
-
Not reservable except for group sites. This very popular 35-site rustic campground has been reconstructed to be fully accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. Five sites ($12/night) have electricity for RV hookups. A scenic 1.6 mile hiking trail with benches goes around 145-acre Colwell Lake. There's a swimming beach (mats make it wheelchair-accessible), boat ramp, and pump station. Fishing is for northern pike, largemouth bass, perch, and panfish. Group sites must be reserved.

INDIAN RIVER CAMPGROUND
(906) 341-5666;
-
not reservable
Proximity to M-94 makes for some road noise at this five-site rustic campground, but the fishing is good, and so is canoe access to the wild and scenic Indian River and canoe trail. There's also a picnic area here. (See above.)
-
About 13 miles south of Shingleton on M-94. $7/night. Open from May 15 thru Oct. 7. Handicap accessible: call.
LITTLE BASS LAKE CAMPGROUND
(906) 341-5666;
-
not reservable
On 84-acre Little Bass Lake, this 12-site rustic campground has no swimming area, and as a result, few children and less noise. Lightly used, the campground is enjoyed by people who want to be away from noise, boating activity, and development. There's carry-in boat access only. Fishing is for largemouth bass, pike, perch, crappie, and bluegill.

LITTLE BEAVER LAKE CAMPGROUND/ PICTURED ROCKS NATIONAL LAKESHORE
(906) 387-3700;
-
not reservable
8 rustic campsites on the shore of Little Beaver Lake are closer together than the other two National Lakeshore campgrounds. Because this campground is so small and so well located, it is the most likely to be full. Have some backup campgrounds in mind. On the beautiful White Pine Trail, with interpretive signs, around the lake. Good location for day hikes. The road down to the campground is so steep, big RVs can't make it back up. About 20 miles east of Munising on H-58, then 3 miles north on Little Beaver Lake Rd. $10/night. Open from May 10 thru Oct. 31. Handicap accessible: 1 site.
