Walleye

walleye

Assuredly one of the most sought after fishes in the Upper Peninsula, the Walleye is literally all over the UP.
Little Bay de Noc and Big Bay de Noc in Delta County are both world renowned for their excellent walleye fishing. Munoscong Bay and Raber Bay in the St. Marys River Waterway and Portage lake in the Houghton Canal Waterway systems are equally well known to produce excellent walleye fishing.

Notable Inland lakes are the Manistique Lakes, Brevort Lake, Au Train Lake, Lake Independence, Indian Lake, Lake Michigammee, Lake Gogebic plus many other smaller lakes have excelent poplulations of walleye.

Known for thier excellent table fare the Walleye and their cousin the Sauger are both low light feeders. They do not like brightness. Just before dark to mid-morning hours seem to be their best feeding times. In dark tanic stained waters they often will feed in the mid-day. Best baits are Plugs, Crawlers, Leeches, and some trolling and casting spoons.
The open season for walleye fishing in the UP is always from May 15- Feb 28.

There are several walleye guides and fishing charters in the Upper Peninsula that are available to assist you in catching this great eating fish.
